This pivotal moment paved the door for a broader perspective to orchestrate a significant role in Pakistan’s healthcare system while also increasing institutional longevity. Since the rank and file were aware of FJMU’s inspirational history that spans over seven decades and its fundamental beliefs, they prepared for university status as a heavenly opportunity to serve at a greater platform with more meaningful contributions.
History of Fatima Jinnah Medical University
Balak Ram Medical College
Balak Ram Medical College first gained notoriety in 1941, when the Punjab Medical Education and Relief Society was founded with 100 founding members. The objective was to construct a medical school that was only open to Hindus.
Mrs Balak Ram, the late Sir Ganga Ram’s daughter-in-law, and her son L. Sri Ram, together with other members of the society, bought the late Lala Har Kishan Lal’s Queen’s Road residence to house a medical college.
It was known as Balak Ram Medical College in honour of Sir Ganga Ram’s son. 50 students, 44 male and 6 female were admitted exclusively on the basis of merit when Balak Ram Medical College first opened its doors in 1942.
His son L. Lahori Mal Khosla gave money to the R. B. Dr Beli Ram Anatomy Hall, which carries his name. When the Subcontinent was split up, Balak Ram Medical College was abandoned. Medical education and training came to an end due to a shortage of instructors and pupils. The premises were off-limits to all activities.
